Detectives with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office ALERT Squad (Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team) have charged a Sears employee at Southland Mall for using Sears shipping labels to sell stolen electronics and other products on the internet.

Detectives say L. C. Young, 23, of Memphis, an employee at the Sears Auto Center, bought stolen merchandise from various people in the community and then sold the products on his eBay site. Deputies say the merchandise was stolen from Office Max and other businesses.

ALERT Squad detectives received a tip about the scam a couple of weeks ago when a man bought camera equipment from Young’s eBay site. When the shipment arrived at his house in California, he noticed the products had been packed in a brake pads box with the shipper being the Sears Auto Center at Southland Mall.

Deputies arrested Young yesterday after he shipped a Microsoft “ZUNE” to an undercover Deputy. ALERT Squad detectives also found a flat screen TV and computer at his home. Deputies found shipping labels from Sears in Young’s two cars. A 1998 Mercedes and 1999 Chrysler were seized along with money in Young’s bank account. So far, more than $52,000 worth of stolen property has been traced to the scheme.

Young has been charged with Theft of Property over $10,000 and may face additional charges.
