Release Date: November 8, 2007

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is looking for citizens to be part of an upcoming training class for Emergency Services Bureau volunteers.

“We currently have 100 volunteers in this vital unit of the Sheriff’s Office. Yet, we need more people to be part of the squad. This is an excellent opportunity for citizens to gain some important skills and serve the community,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Starting January 3, 2008, volunteers will go through a five-month course that includes search and rescue techniques and “First Responder” emergency medical training. Volunteers also will learn about various Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures. Squad members are required to serve 24 hours-a-month to maintain membership in the bureau.

Upon graduation, Emergency Services volunteers are called to assist Deputies in a variety of ways including searches for lost persons, providing first aid at large community events, and assisting officers in “Zero Tolerance” crime suppression efforts conducted routinely throughout neighborhoods in Shelby County.

Candidates must be 18 years-old and be a United States citizen. Applicants must also pass a drug test, criminal background check and meet other job requirements.

Those interested in becoming an Emergency Services Bureau Volunteer should contact the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Bureau at (901) 867-1440.
