Release Date: August 6, 2007

A Fayette County man has been identified as the driver of a sport utility vehicle that crashed into a tree in Fisherville early yesterday morning. Namon Cunningham, 51, was traveling west on Macon Road near Billy Bryant Road when the vehicle veered off the road.

About 6 o’clock yesterday morning, a jogger called Sheriff’s Deputies after he noticed the maroon 2002 Ford Explorer off the roadway. Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Investigators said residents heard what they thought was a crash about 1:30 Sunday morning but did not see the vehicle which was resting on its side against a tree. Macon is a two-lane road with no street lights.

Deputies say Cunningham, who was dead at the scene, was wearing his seatbelt. Traffic investigators say there were no skid marks on the road and believe Cunningham might have fallen asleep. The investigation about the crash is on-going.

Namon Cunningham is the seventh person to be killed this year in traffic crashes investigated by Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies.
