Sheriff’s Fugitive Squad “Calling Card” May Increase Captures

Release Date: April 14, 2005

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division are taking steps to better insure the accuracy of thousands of outstanding warrants.

“We currently have about 40,000 people wanted for various charges throughout all municipalities in Shelby County. The information card we’ll be leaving at various locations will go a long way in helping us get the most accurate information possible in hopes of catching many of these wanted persons,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

When Fugitive Deputies visit homes and businesses looking for suspects, a card will be left giving specific instructions about how to contact the Sheriff’s Office either by phone or the internet regarding the need for officers to talk to a wanted person.

The idea is to get updated information about the person’s whereabouts and to reduce complaints when the wanted person no longer lives or works at the last known address on file.

The majority of the fugitives in Shelby County are wanted on misdemeanor charges.

The information cards will not be left at locations where someone has been indicted or wanted on more serious charges. In those instances the squad works covertly in hopes to keep those persons from fleeing Shelby County.

Citizens wanting to report information about wanted persons may contact the Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Squad at (901) 545-5620 or go on line at www.shelbywarrants.org
