Release Date: April 16, 2007
Deputies have charged eight people in a series of gang-related crimes that happened in South-East Shelby County recently.
Investigators say one of the events, a drive-by shooting, was sparked last week by on-going rivalries between criminal gangs.
Deputies say the shooting happened last Thursday night just after 5 o’clock at a home in the 7000 block of Germantown Trails.
Several teenagers were at the house playing basketball when three cars pulled up. Those inside the car began harassing the basketball players who then went inside the house.
Moments later, shots were fired at the house from at least one of the cars. No one was injured.
Within minutes, Deputies arrested Cortez Johnson, 22, of Memphis, and a 17 year-old young man after their car was involved in minor traffic crash near the shooting scene.
Both were charged with eight counts of aggravated assault.
Deputies say the drive-by shooting was in retaliation to an earlier incident last week.
In response to the drive-by shooting and the growing number of gang graffiti incidents and other vandalism in the area, detectives in the General Investigation, Street Crimes and Patrol bureaus saturated the South-East Shelby County area last Friday evening.
The extra patrols led to six more arrests.
Two young men, 15 and 17 years old, were arrested and charged in connection with the drive-by shooting on Germantown Trails.
Later Friday evening, four others were arrested, three teenagers and an adult. They were wanted for other recent gang-related crimes in the area.
During the special enforcement initiative Deputies confiscated a pistol and almost 20 g of marijuana.
