Weekend Beer Sting Results In Violations At Grocery and Convenience Stores
Release Date: April 12, 2005
Undercover Metro D.U.I. Unit officers visited convenience stores and grocery stores this past weekend. Employees at 23 businesses were cited for selling beer to minors. Nine of the clerks were cited for selling beer more than once to underage customers.
The sting was conducted this past Friday and Saturday evening, April 8 and April 9. Officers visited businesses in Hickory Hill and other areas of South and East Memphis to see if clerks checked the identification of customers before beer was sold.
In all, officers wrote 32 alcohol violations during the weekend sting.
Four clerks who did not have identification were arrested and transported to jail after the stings. The other clerks were issued misdemeanor citations which require them to report to jail at a specific time to be fingerprinted and booked.
For the past several months, Metro D.U.I. officers have been visiting bars, grocery stores and convenience stores throughout Shelby County in an effort to curb the sale of alcohol to minors.
The undercover effort, funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, is on-going.
