Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies are part of a multi-agency law enforcement initiative that begins tonight to promote safe driving.  “Hands Across the Border” involves Sheriff’s Deputies, police officers and state troopers.

"This is a busy time of year for vacation travelers. We are proud to link up with other law enforcement agencies to conduct routine safety checkpoints throughout the summer.  The goal is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic crashes," said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Special teams of Deputies will be watching tonight for drivers who are speeding, driving recklessly or impaired by drugs or alcohol.  Along with Sheriffs’ Deputies, Memphis Police Officers and Tennessee State Troopers will conduct similar initiatives.

The “Hands Across the Border” initiative began in 1991 and is coordinated every year by the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office.  The program promotes the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of seat belts and child safety seats.

A news conference about “Hands Across the Border” will be held tomorrow morning, May 30, at the Tennessee Welcome Center on north-bound I-55 just north of Stateline Road at 10 o’clock.
