Release Date: May 19, 2005

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies will be taking part in a multi-agency law enforcement initiative next week to stress the importance of safe driving in anticipation of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. The enforcement theme, “Hands Across the Border”, will involve Deputies and police officers from various agencies along with state troopers.

“The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is proud to be joining more than 12,000 law enforcement agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in conducting sobriety and safety checkpoints and other special law enforcement activities as part of this unprecedented effort to save lives,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

The effort, which officially begins on Monday evening, May 23, 2005, will involve sobriety checkpoints and zero-tolerance enforcement of speeding, reckless driving and seat belt violations. Coordinated by the Tennessee Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Office, “Hands Across the Border”, is held annually to promote traffic safety and the use of seat belts.

A news conference about the results of the multi-agency traffic saturation will be held at a news conference on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the Welcome Center on North-Bound I-55 between Brooks Road and Shelby Drive at 10:00 a.m.
