Hickory Hill Area Crime Suppression Effort

Release Date: January 24, 2003

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office conducted a massive crime suppression effort during the evening hours of January 24, 2003 in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis. Sheriff Mark Luttrell says the multi-agency crime saturation event involved almost 150 deputies and other law enforcement officers who concentrated their efforts in South-East Memphis.

“The Memphis Police Department requested our help. Combining resources gave us a strategic and effective plan to address crime. We’re sending a clear message that crime in Memphis and Shelby County will not be tolerated,” said Sheriff Luttrell.

The Hickory Hill neighborhood was chosen as a result of several gang-related crimes, drug dealing, auto thefts, burglaries and various traffic violations being committed in the past several months.

The event involved many crime reduction initiatives being conducted at the same time.

Here are the results of the crime reduction effort:

34 TOTAL ARRESTS Breakdown:

  • 5 Felonies
  • 24 Misdemeanors
  • 4 Misdemeanor citations (arrested but given a scheduled time for booking)
  • 1 Juvenile citation
  • 195 traffic citations issued

Of the 34 total arrests, 26 were known fugitives and taken into custody by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Fugitive Squad.

Already in the past few months, 150 people have been arrested and more than 350 traffic citations issued after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to address crime.
