High Speed Kills Memphis Teenager In Early Morning Car Crash
Release Date: September 22, 2004
A deadly car crash claimed the life of a Memphis teenager this morning near Bartlett. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say Cody Rawdon, 18, of Memphis, was killed after the car he was riding in ran off the road and flipped.
Traffic Deputies say another teenager, Rodney Skinner, 19, also of Memphis, was driving his 1994 Chevrolet Camaro south on Old Brownsville Road just after three o’clock this morning. Investigators say as the car topped a hill, it went airborne and flipped at the intersection of Old Brownsville at Spring Lake.
Both Skinner and Rawdon were ejected from the car. Rawdon was dead at the scene. Skinner was flown by helicopter to the Regional Medical Center where he is in critical condition.
Deputies say neither of the teenagers was wearing a seatbelt. Investigators say speed caused the crash. The speed limit on Old Brownsville where the wreck happened is 45 miles per hour. Deputies don’t believe alcohol was involved. However, blood alcohol tests will be conducted by the Shelby County Medical Examiner.
So far this year, 18 people have died on Shelby County roads patrolled by Sheriff’s Deputies.
