Traffic Safety Initiative on Highway 14 Yields 73 Violations

Release Date: January 24, 2005

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies teamed up with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol this past Friday night in a “zero tolerance” traffic safety initiative near the Shelby and Tipton County Line.

“This two-lane highway has been the scene of many traffic fatalities. Speeding and reckless driving have been the cause of many of these crashes. Combining our law enforcement resources proved to be an effective way of sending a clear message to drivers who travel this roadway,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

With more people living in North Shelby County and Tipton County, traffic volumes have grown significantly and with it have come an increased number of traffic crashes involving speeding and reckless driving.

In last Friday night's safety initiative, 73 violations were noted, most having to do with people not wearing seat belts. Deputies from both Sheriff's Offices and State Troopers on patrol have noted continuing traffic violations in the area and have also received calls from citizens about the behavior of drivers on Highway 14 between the Memphis City Limits and the Tipton County Line.

During the next several months, Deputies and State Troopers will continue their efforts to aggressively monitor traffic on Highway 14.
