Afternoon Update

Shelter Command/Coordination: Shelby County Office of Preparedness-Memphis and Shelby County EMA Emergency Operations Center (901) 515-2525.  Bob Nations, Director

Total Evacuees in Memphis and Shelby County: Approximately 1250

Evacuees Expected: 600 persons will arrive on Amtrak between 9 p.m. and midnight tonight

Shelter Locations managed and monitored by EMA Operations and American Red Cross

  • Memphis Park Services Community Centers for those ordered to leave their homes-9
  • Catholic High Schools-Bishop Byrne 1475 East Shelby Drive-AT CAPACITY
  • Catholic High School 61 North McLean-AT CAPACITY

 Shelter Management:  American Red Cross
Shelter Health Services: Memphis and Shelby County Health Department
Evacuee center security: Memphis Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office

Other Shelters in Operation:

  • Cummings Street Baptist Church-250 East Raines Road-AT CAPACITY
  • First Baptist Church of West Memphis, Arkansas-200 Missouri Street (901) 508-0665 (cell phone of shelter coordinator)

Those wishing to open a shelter: Contact the EMA Operation Center at 515-2525.  Facilities need to be evaluated by the American Red Cross before they are opened.  Any shelters that open this afternoon will be included in the evening update.

Pets:  Not allowed in the shelters.  Boarding arrangements can be made by calling the EMA Operations Center

Food: Provided by Memphis City Schools

Transportation:  MATA Buses

Donated Goods: None are needed at this time

The Shelby County Office of Preparedness/Memphis Shelby County Emergency Management Agency is open 24 hours a day.

Representatives of Shelby County and Memphis City Government divisions and various community agencies are at the center monitoring hurricane “Gustav” and “Hanna.”
