Sheriff’s Office To Assist In Hurricane Relief Effort

Release Date: September 2, 2005

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has Deputies and Emergency Services personnel on stand-by to assist hurricane-ravaged communities in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Hurricane Katrina has left thousands of people homeless and in need of medical assistance and other supplies. Looting and crime are hampering rescue efforts.

“Several of our Reserve Deputies and volunteers from the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit left for the Mississippi area this morning after a request by the National Sheriffs’ Association.

However, our personnel were recalled and are awaiting specific assignments from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency which is coordinating the deployment of personnel from Tennessee to the communities affected by the hurricane," said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office command staff are also assisting at the Emergency Operations Center which has been established at the Memphis and Shelby County Emergency Management Agency.

EMA is helping coordinate lodging and other assistance for the 2,000 hurricane victims that have come to Shelby County.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Reserve Deputies, Ronnie Lancaster, coordinated the delivery of the supplies to the Jackson, Mississippi area.
