Movie Actor and Film Crew Production Team Member Face Rape Charges

Release Date: July 28, 2004

Shelby County Sheriff’s Detectives have charged two men involved in the filming of the movie, “Hustle and Flow,” with Aggravated Rape.

Scenes from the movie are being shot in Memphis at the Shelby County Correctional Center. Yesterday evening just after five thirty, a Memphis woman who is a scene “extra” in the film, reported that the two men sexually assaulted her.

According to the Affidavit of Complaint, Wayne Witherspoon, 42, of Los Angeles, California, lured her into a production trailer. She told investigators that once inside he forcibly removed her clothes and exposed himself. Anthony Anderson, 33, was already in the trailer. She says he joined in the assault. The woman said both assaulted her with their hands and took pictures of her while she was nude.

A witness told investigators he heard the woman screaming and went to the trailer. He managed to unlock the door. When he did, the woman ran from the trailer without her clothes.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Detectives late this afternoon charged Anthony Anderson, identified as an actor in the film, and Wayne Witherspoon, a member of the production team, with Aggravated Rape.

Anthony Anderson is from Burbank, California. Wayne Witherspoon is from Los Angeles, California.

Both men are being held at the Shelby County Jail on $20,000 bond.
