Infant’s Death Ruled Accidental in Backyard Tragedy

Release Date: September 21, 2004

The Shelby County Medical Examiner says a 17-month-old girl accidentally drowned in a landscaping pool at her grandparents’ home in North Shelby County late yesterday afternoon.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Detectives say Maylyn McCann and her family were staying at Maylyn’s grandparents’ home at the Kingsway Trailer Park near North Watkins and Highway 51.

The McCann family had traveled last week to Shelby County from a small town in Alabama to escape Hurricane Ivan. Deputies say as the family was preparing to return to their home yesterday afternoon, Maylyn wandered to the back of the trailer and either slipped and fell into the landscaping pond, or went into it after a toy.

Her parents, grandparents and neighbors fervently tried to revive her. However, Maylyn was pronounced dead a short time later at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center.

Deputies say there will be no charges placed in connection with the tragedy.
