Inmate Attacks Shelby County Deputy Jailers

Robert KellyTwo Shelby County Deputy Jailers are recovering this evening from injuries they suffered yesterday from an inmate at the men’s division of the Shelby County Jail in downtown Memphis.

Deputy Jailers Olivia Mills and Tiar Shabbaz were hurt while attempting to escort inmate Robert Kelly, 26, to an interview with the jail staff. Kelly was in jail for aggravated robbery, assault to commit bodily harm, and two counts of aggravated assault. He had been confined to a solitary cell for not complying with jail rules.

The attack happened just after 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Kelly initially grabbed Deputy Jailer Mills injuring her neck. Deputy Jailer Shabbaz then went to Officer Mills’ aid. He suffered hand and wrist injuries during the incident.

Deputy Jailer Mills is in Methodist University Hospital in non-critical condition. Deputy Jailer Shabbaz was treated and released from the hospital.

Robert Kelly now faces two additional charges of aggravated assault for attacking the two Deputy Jailers.

Deputy Jailer Mills and Deputy Jailer Shabbaz have both been on staff at the Shelby County Jail since 2001.
