Deputies Capture Intoxicated Man After Frigid Swim In Lakeland

Release Date: December 30, 2005

Morgan MitchellA man who ran from a Sheriff’s Deputy not only was arrested on several charges but got a severe case of cold feet after he dove into a lake in Lakeland.

It all started just after midnight this morning when the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a homeowner in the 4100 block of Larch Point Cove.

The homeowner told dispatchers a visitor at his home was drinking and had become violent. Before a Sheriff’s Deputy arrived, however, the man drove away.

While Deputy Joshua was at the house to investigate what happened, the man returned driving a Chevy pick-up truck.

After seeing the Deputy, the man bolted from the truck, ran through nearby yards and then tried to escape by diving into the Lake behind the home on Larch Point Cove.

With the temperature in the low 30s early this morning, the man swam to a boat dock where Deputy Fox took him into custody.

After being treated for minor injuries during the chase and his frosty swim in the lake, Morgan Mitchell, 33, of El Dorado, Arkansas, was given a warm blanket and charged with Driving Under the Influence, Public Intoxication, Disorderly Conduct and Refusing to Submit to a Breath Alcohol Test.
