Jail Corrections Deputy Caught in Sheriff’s Office Drug Sting

Release Date: September 20, 2006

Deputy Jailer Anthony HaleyA Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jailer faces an illegal drug possession charge after being caught by the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Squad.  Anthony Haley, 27, was arrested yesterday afternoon by undercover Narcotics Deputies in Midtown.

“This arrest sends yet another message that we at the Sheriff’s Office are aggressively pursuing any person on our staff who might be involved in criminal activity.  The professional work being done by the staff at the Shelby County Jail will not be jeopardized by the criminal acts of an employee.  The net is out there.  If someone chooses to break the law, the person will be caught,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Haley serves as a Corrections Deputy at the men’s jail facility at 201 Poplar. He was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in December of 2005.

According to investigators, Haley agreed to meet what he thought was a drug dealer near the intersection of Poplar at Cleveland yesterday afternoon.  Haley was to purchase marijuana.  However, the dealer was actually a Shelby County Deputy who sold him the drug.

Deputies say the investigation as to whom the marijuana was being bought for is still being investigated.  Haley agreed to allow Deputies to search his home and more marijuana was found there.

The case will be turned over to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office for a possible indictment against Haley.

Anthony Haley has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
