Deputy Jailer Injured in Traffic Crash With Memphis Fire Truck

Cheryl BernardA Sergeant at the Shelby County Jail was hurt today when her car was hit by a Memphis Fire Department truck on an emergency call in south-east Shelby County. The crash sent her and four firefighters to the hospital.

Traffic investigators say Cheryl Bernard, 50, an employee at the Shelby County Jail since 1982, remains at the Regional Medical Center. One firefighter is also still there recovering from his injuries. Both are in non-critical condition.

Investigators say Ms. Bernard was traveling south on Ross Road just after eleven this morning. As her car entered the intersection at Holmes Road, a Memphis Fire Department truck traveling west, hit her red Honda. The truck was on a call and the emergency lights and siren were operating.

The driver of the fire truck swerved to miss Ms. Bernard’s vehicle but hit the front of her car. The fire truck then veered off the road and into a ditch.

Ms. Bernard was issued a traffic citation for failing to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle.
