Sheriff's Deputies Join With Tennessee State Troopers and Tipton County Sheriff's Deputies In Traffic Safety Effort Tonight

Release Date: January 21, 2005

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies will be conducting a “zero tolerance” traffic safety initiative in North Shelby County tonight.

Shelby County Deputies, Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Deputies with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office, will be working jointly this evening to stop drivers who may be impaired, driving recklessly, speeding or not wearing seat belts.

“Our Deputies will be working in partnership with these two other law enforcement agencies to send a clear message to those who travel on this roadway. With more people living in this part of North Shelby County and Tipton County, traffic volumes have grown significantly and with it have come an increased number of incidents that involve speeding and reckless driving,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Deputies on patrol have noted continuing traffic violations in the area and have also received calls from citizens about the behavior of drivers on Highway 14 between the Memphis City Limits and the Tipton County Line. During the past few years, many people have been killed on this two-lane stretch of highway. Just last week, the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated a traffic crash on Highway 14 that killed one person.

Tonight's traffic safety initiative will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through the early morning hours tomorrow.
