Holiday Traffic Safety Effort Planned For July 4th Weekend

Law enforcement agencies will be combining their resources this weekend to strictly enforce traffic laws and stop impaired drivers.
“There will be a lot of celebrating going on for Independence Day. We want this to be a safe weekend. Our goal is to have no one killed or seriously injured in a traffic crash in Shelby County this Fourth of July weekend,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
On Friday, July 2, 2004, Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic, Patrol and Reserve divisions will join forces with the Metro D.U.I. Squad, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Millington Police Department. Officers will target these roads in north Shelby County from 4 p.m. through 10 p.m.:
- Highway 51
- Highway 14
- State Route 385
On Sunday, July 4th, the Metro D.U.I. Squad and deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Patrol, Traffic and Reserve divisions will continue the enforcement effort in an area of east Shelby County bounded by:
- North-Highway 70
- South-Highway 64
- East-Airline Road
- West-Canada Road
Officers will continue to focus on drivers who may be impaired and those who are speeding and following other vehicles too closely.
Vehicles will also be checked for expired tags and registrations, and for seat belt, child seat and booster seat violations.
