Officers Charge 17 Employees At Cordova and Midtown Stores With Selling Beer To Minors

Officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad issued misdemeanor citations to clerks at 17 stores this past Friday night (June 24) for selling beer to underage customers. A clerk at one store sold beer twice to a person under the age of 21.
Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Memphis Police Department and Germantown Police Department spent several hours Friday evening visiting 44 grocery and convenience stores in Cordova and Midtown. Officers entered stores with underage persons and observed whether clerks checked customer identifications before beer was sold.
At one store, one adult customer also received a misdemeanor citation for offering to buy beer for an underage person.
Those issued citations will have to report to the Shelby County Jail Annex at 201 Poplar. They will be fingerprinted and booked in the Criminal History, Records and Identification Division.
Also during the sting, officers arrested one person for impaired driving.
Overtime paid to the officers was funded by a grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. The beer stings will continue throughout the year in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic crashes involving impaired drivers under the legal drinking age of 21.
