Kidnapping Suspect Captured by Mid-South Fugitive Task Force

Horace OwensA Memphis man who allegedly kidnapped a former girlfriend and their young child earlier this month in Nashville, Tennessee was captured this past weekend in Memphis by the Mid-South Fugitive Task Force.  The task force is comprised of officers from the United States Marshal’s Service, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Memphis Police Department.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad Deputy Tony Townsend led the investigation to capture Horace Owens, 27, of Memphis.  Owens was taken into custody about 8 o’clock this past Friday night, February 23rd, at a home in the 300 block of Leath Street near downtown Memphis.   

Deputy Townsend received information from the Metro Nashville Police Department that on February 14, 2007, Owens allegedly kidnapped his former girlfriend, Jamese Smith, 24, and the couple's two year-old daughter.

Smith says Owens surprised her and their daughter at a Nashville parking lot.

After forcing them into Smith's car at gunpoint, he drove them around the city and eventually released Smith and their daughter near their Nashville apartment.  Owens then returned to Memphis. 

Owens will be returned to Nashville to face the charges.
