Sheriff’s Office Detective Receives Top Honor From Kiwanis Club
Release Date: September 15, 2004
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detective Steve Montgomery has been honored by the Kiwanis Club of Memphis as, “Deputy of the Year.” He received the award at a ceremony today at the Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis.
“Detective Montgomery is a model officer. His professionalism and dedication are very much appreciated. I am honored to join with the Kiwanis Club of Memphis in thanking him for his outstanding service to our community,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
Detective Montgomery was recognized for his investigative work which has helped lead to the arrest of more than 40 people and the recovery of more than a quarter of a million dollars in stolen and counterfeit merchandise during the past several months.
Deputy Montgomery leads a team of investigators in the Sheriff’s Office “ALERT Squad.” ALERT stands for Area Law Enforcement Retail Team. The squad works with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies along with almost 50 Shelby County area retailers to help combat retail theft and counterfeiting.
Detective Montgomery conceived the idea for the ALERT Squad.
“We began to realize that what were once considered petty crimes, such as shoplifting, were connected to larger and very elaborate crime networks operating in Shelby County. We’ve now connected many of these local cases to crimes that have occurred in other cities and even other parts of the world. I accept this award today on behalf of all of those who work with us on the Sheriff’s Office ALERT Squad,” said Deputy Montgomery, who has served with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for the past 26 years.
