Six Members of Lakeland Family Hurt in Traffic Crash
Release Date: November 1, 2006
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Deputies say a two-vehicle crash sent six members of a Lakeland family to the hospital last night.
The crash happened just before 10 p.m. on Houston Levee Road, just south of Raleigh LaGrange Road. One of the victims, an 8 year-old girl, was air-lifted to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.
Deputies say a 17 year-old Cordova teenager was driving a 1999 Volvo north on Houston Levee when his car crashed head-on into a 2000 Honda Civic. No other persons were in the vehicle. The Teenager was not injured.
The driver of the Honda Civic, Cecila Vazquez-Marban, 24, was injured along with her mother, Reina Arrieta-Hernandez, 45. They were taken to the Regional Medical Center where they remain in stable condition.
Ms. Marban’s 8 year-old niece, remains in critical condition at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. Three other children related to the little girl were also in the vehicle, a girl, 6, and two boys, ages 2 and 12. Those children remain at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical being treated for non-serious injuries.
Deputies say the children were not in safety seats or booster seats. The two adults were also not wearing seatbelts. Investigators say charges are pending against Ms. Marban.
The teenager driving the Volvo told deputies the crash occurred when he briefly took his eyes off the roadway which caused his vehicle to drift into the opposing lane of traffic.
Deputies say the teenager was not speeding and alcohol was not involved. Investigators, however, say charges are pending. Investigators say he was wearing his seatbelt.
