Shelby County Sheriff's Office Traffic Deputies say a Lakeland man was killed this evening as he drove his pickup truck on an unfinished stretch of Highway 385 in East Shelby County.
Deputies say David Steele, 37, of Lakeland, entered the unopened portion of Highway 385 at the Highway 64 entrance ramp just after 5 o'clock.
Investigators say Steele and his 13 year-old daughter were in a 2002 Ford Sport-Trac when Steele drove the truck around a barricade to go south on the highway still under construction.
The truck traveled on payment for a short time and then continued on gravel about a quarter of a mile. The road then turned to concrete. As the truck crossed over Gray's Creek, the vehicle went out of control, hit a guard rail on the bridge and rolled over several times.
Steele, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out of the truck. He was dead at the crash site. His daughter, who was wearing a seat belt, was only slightly injured.
She was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center.
Deputies say speed was a factor in the crash. Crash Investigators say there was NO evidence that Steele had been drinking.
