New Technology will Help Deputies Recover Stolen Vehicles

Release Date: June 5, 2006

Several Shelby County Sheriff’s Office squad cars will soon be equipped with electronic devices that will help Deputies locate stolen vehicles.

Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. will join representatives of other law enforcement leaders from West Tennessee at a news conference this Wednesday, June 7, to announce details of the “LoJack” technology system.

Stolen vehicles equipped with the “LoJack” transmitting devices emit a signal that is picked up by special receivers that will be installed in 21 Shelby County Sheriff’s Office cruisers.

If a stolen vehicle with the “Lojack” system comes near a squad car with a receiver, Deputies will be able to track the vehicle and hopefully arrest the person responsible for stealing it.

Last year, there were 297 vehicles stolen in the seven districts patrolled by Sheriff’s Deputies.

Through April of this year, 106 vehicles have been stolen.

Sheriff Luttrell and other Sheriff’s Office personnel will join “LoJack” company representatives at the news conference which will be held on Wednesday, June 7, at the Pyramid downtown on Front Street at 10:00 a.m.
