Murder victim’s car recovered by Sheriff’s Deputies

Release Date: April 1, 2003

Shelby County Sheriff’s detectives have found the car used in the murder of a Memphis man this past weekend. Yesterday afternoon investigators discovered the car abandoned in the North Memphis area near the intersection of Second at Bickford. The 1989 Mercury Marquis owned by Forty-three year-old Filipe Hernandez is being processed for fingerprints. Hernandez, who lived at 1005 Par in the Frayser area, was killed outside a home near Millington after being shot. Sheriff’s detectives say they do not know the motive of the killing.

Witnesses say they heard gunshots shortly before nine o’clock p.m. on Saturday evening. Not long after that, investigators say Hernandez, who had already been shot once, stumbled onto the front porch of a house in the 7800 block of Mahoney Road. As he was pleading for help, one of the two assailants shot Hernandez again with a shotgun. Hernandez was dead at the scene.

Detectives say they are looking for two black men in connection with the shooting. One was of a small build, and appeared to be in his twenties. The other man is described as being tall and thin, wearing jeans and a white shirt.

Anyone with information about this murder is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at 545-5600 or Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
