Man Opens Fire At Sheriff’s Narcotics Deputies During Raid

Release Date: May 26, 2006

Larry HughesA man armed with an assault rifle shot several times at a team of Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies yesterday when they attempted to search his Berclair area apartment for drugs.

Just before 5 o’clock yesterday evening, Deputies went to the French Village Apartments on Summer, near Graham, with a search warrant.

Deputies had learned drugs were allegedly being stored and distributed from the apartment which is in the 4000 block of St. Pierre Boulevard.

Narcotics and SWAT Team Deputies knocked on the apartment door and identified themselves several times. When there was no answer, officers then pried open the door.

As they stepped inside, again identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Deputies, investigators say Larry Hughes, 21, who lived at the apartment, ambushed the officers.

Hughes was armed with a SKS Assault Rifle and fired four times at the Deputies. The officers immediately took cover and DID NOT fire back. None of the bullets hit the officers.

After a brief stand-off with officers, Hughes and the other two people inside surrendered after SWAT Team officers tossed a “flash-bang” device inside the apartment.

After the shooting, Deputies searched the house and found what they were looking for:

  • 4.6 Grams of crack cocaine bagged for distribution
  • 3 ounces of powder cocaine
  • Scales used to measure the drugs
  • One glass “cooking tube” was found with cocaine residue inside

After questioning all three people at the apartment, Deputies released the woman and the other man.

Larry Hughes has been charged with six (6) counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder and Felony Possession of Narcotics.
