South-East Shelby County Man Shot Last Night During Home Invasion

Release Date: January 12, 2006

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking for three, possibly four men who barged their way into a home in South-East Shelby County last night. They shot one man and took a large amount of money from the home.

It happed just before 10 p.m. last evening in the 4800 block of Harvest Park, in the Harvest Knoll neighborhood, not far from Hacks Cross and Bill Morris Parkway.

Detectives say Vernon Taylor, 35, was visiting his cousin, Starla Durham, 24, and her boyfriend, Jerrmaine Carroll, who is 25 years old.

Investigators say as Taylor took out the trash, the assailants, armed with guns forced him back into the home.

Once in the house, the robbers made everyone, including Ms. Durham’s two teenaged nephews lie on the floor while the house was ransacked.

On their way out, Jermaine Carroll was shot several times in his legs. He was taken to the Med in critical condition. The others in the house were not hurt.

Investigators say they are still trying to determine a motive and don’t yet know whether Jermaine Carroll knew his attackers.

The robbers were all described to be in their twenties, wearing black hooded sweatshirts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division or Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH (2274).
