Accident Charges

Release Date: November 7, 2002

Chris GonzalezCharges have been placed against a 19-year-old man involved in an early morning traffic accident in North Shelby County that left a Memphis teenager dead.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has charged Christopher J. Gonzales with Reckless Vehicular Homicide, Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death and disregarding a Stop Sign.

The accident happened this morning at the intersection of Raleigh-Millington Road and Duncan Road just after midnight. Traffic Deputies say the car Gonzales was driving disregarded the Stop sign and was hit by a chartered bus returning to Memphis from a casino trip in Mississippi. No one on the bus was injured and no charges were placed against the bus driver.

The teenager who was killed, sixteen-year-old Amanda Campbell of Memphis, was riding in the backseat of Gonzales' car. She was airlifted to the MED where she later died. Another girl in the car with her was taken to the MED, treated and released.

Investigators say Gonzales initially ran away from the accident scene but was later caught and arrested before being taken to the MED for his injuries. Deputies say other charges could be filed pending the outcome of blood alcohol tests.
