Sheriff’s Deputies Issue 548 Traffic Tickets During Safety Initiatives This Past Week
Release Date: June 1, 2004
Officers with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division and the Metro D.U.I. Unit wrote more than 500 traffic citations during the week of Memorial Day, which is one of the busiest holiday traffic times of the year.
“It was important for our officers to keep a high presence throughout Shelby County during the holiday weekend. Having officers stationed in areas where we have had many accidents sent a reminder to citizens that we are serious in our efforts to help keep our streets safe,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. Since February of this year, there have been 19 accidents in south-east Shelby County.
The safety initiatives began on Wednesday night, May 26. On that evening, officers wrote 167 violations, many of those involving motorcycle riders who were not wearing helmets approved by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
This past Friday night, on May 28, officers conducted a seat belt check point at Hacks Cross at Shelby Drive. During that five hour enforcement effort, 119 violations were written. Two people were arrested for driving with no license.
Then last evening on Memorial Day, deputies were again at Hacks Cross at Shelby Drive and on Riverdale, just north of Holmes Road. Those enforcement efforts yielded one arrest for a person driving without a license and 262 citations.
