Sheriff's Patrol Deputies Catch Millington Area Burglars In the Act

Release Date: January 19, 2005

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies who responded to a “suspicious person” call at a home near Millington this past weekend arrested two people for breaking into the home. One of the burglars was a 13-year-old girl. A third man was taken into custody yesterday.

Mark Berryhill James Emerson

Deputies had been called to the house a week before. It had been burglarized. So when Patrol Deputies Charles Frazier and Ray Brenner got the suspicious person call about eleven o'clock Sunday morning, they quickly responded.

When they arrived at the house in the 7700 block of Nimitz near the Navy installation, they found the back door of the house open. As the Deputies approached the house, two men ran away. Deputies then entered the house and found another intruder, a 13 year-old girl, in the kitchen.

Within minutes, Deputies had tracked down one of the two men who had run from them. Deputy Steven Culley located Mark Berryhill, 18, at his home near-by. Deputy Culley found the shirts Berryhill and another man wore when they ran from the burglarized house on Nimitz.

Yesterday, undercover Deputies arrested James Emerson, 20, in the Nutbush area of Memphis. Emerson also lives in the Millington area neighborhood where they burglary happened. Emerson, Berryhill, and the 13 year-old girl, have been charged with aggravated burglary. Sheriff's Detectives are checking to see if the three were involved in the previous burglary at the house on Nimintz and six other burglaries that have happened in the neighborhood in the past two months.
