Motorcyclist Dies In Crash With A Shelby County School Bus Near Lakeland

A man riding a motorcycle suffered critical injuries, and later died, this morning when a Shelby County School Bus pulled into his path on Canada Road near Lakeland.

Officers say Gene T. Allen, 55 of Lakeland, was going north on Canada Road about 8:30 this morning. As he approached a “Y” intersection where Canada becomes Old Brownsville Road, he met a Shelby County School bus on the way to Lakeland Elementary School.

The bus veered in front of Allen’s motorcycle which then hit the right side of the bus and slid underneath it.

Allen had severe leg injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but later succumbed to these injuries.

The driver of the Shelby County School bus, Yvonnda Eggerson, 41, was given a ticket for failing to yield a left turn. Neither she nor any of the children on board the bus suffered any injuries.
