Shelby County Sheriff's Detectives say a man was robbed in the front yard of his North Shelby County home this morning.

After the robbery, the victim and the suspect had a shootout in the neighborhood.

Deputies say Dennis Hernandez, 35, who lives in the 5500 block of Banbury Cove, was working in his front yard with another man about 11 o'clock.

Hernandez said that's when a man with a pistol walked up to him and demanded his wallet.

Hernandez gave him the wallet. The suspect then pistol whipped Hernandez.

The other man with Hernandez, Ricardo Garfias, 33, of Memphis, was not hurt.

After the attack, Deputies say Hernandz went inside his house and got his pistol.

He and Garfias then got into Garfias' Ford pick-up truck and chased the suspect a couple of blocks away to Old Brownsville Road.

That's when Hernandez got out of the truck and chased the robber.

Deputies say Hernandez fired his pistol at the suspect who investigators believe was possibly injured.

The suspect's gun was found behind a home in the 3600 block of Old Brownsville Road. Cash taken in the robbery was also found in the backyard.

The suspect got away. He is a young black man, 18 to 25 years of age, who wore a white tee shirt, blue jeans and a black dew rag.

He was seen leaving the area in a late model white Ford Crown Victoria with dark tinted windows and oversized chrome wheels. Another young black man was driving.

During the shootout, a garage door window was shot out of a home in the 3600 block of Old Brownsville Road. No one was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Sheriff's Investigators will consult with the Shelby County District Attorney's Office about whether Hernandez will face any charges.

Hernandez does not have a permit to carry his weapon in public.
