Citizens Urged To Join National Observance For Neighborhood Watch

Release Date: July 30, 2004

Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell, Jr., is calling on neighborhood association leaders across Shelby County to be part of a nation-wide observance of Neighborhood Watch on August 3, 2004. Neighborhood Watch groups provide the foundation for partnerships with law enforcement agencies. The Neighborhood Watch program is an effective initiative proven to reduce crime.

“On August 3rd, those involved in neighborhood watch programs are urged to leave their porch lights on all night to remind their neighbors about the importance of looking after each other. People knowing their neighbors and reporting any suspicious activities are the first steps in controlling crime,” said Sheriff Luttrell.

Sheriff’s Deputies from the Patrol and Crime Prevention Divisions will be visiting neighborhood watch groups during the evening. Neighbors will be able to meet Deputies who patrol their neighborhood as well as Deputies with the Crime Prevention Unit.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Deputies can assist neighbors with establishing watch groups. Deputies teach 27 different crime prevention programs focused on people of all age groups.

For more information about starting a Neighborhood Watch program or have to have a Deputy visit your Neighborhood Watch group on August 3rd, call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (901) 867-1401.
