Metro D . U . I . Squad and Sheriff's Deputies Stepping Up Patrols For New Year's Eve and Upcoming Weekend

Release Date: December 30, 2003

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies will be out in force for the next several days to help prevent crime and traffic crashes during the New Year's Day holiday.

Metro D. U. I. officers with assistance from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Patrol, Traffic, Reserve Deputies and Emergency Services divisions, will be in a “zero tolerance” mode on New Year's Eve. Special emphasis will be given in the Cordova area. Officers will conduct a traffic safety check on New Year's Eve near Germantown Road and Trinity starting at 8 p. m. and continuing through the night until 2 a. m. on New Year's Day.

At this same time, the Metro Gang Unit, S. W. A. T. team and as many as 20 Shelby County Sheriff's Reserve Deputies will assist the Memphis Police Department in the Beale Street area when crowds gather to ring in the New Year in the Entertainment District downtown.

“We wanted to combine forces with the Memphis Police Department to insure the citizens have a safe holiday. It's especially important we make an intense effort to keep drivers under the influence off the roads,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies, its reserve units and the Metro D. U. I. unit will continue the traffic saturations throughout the holiday weekend. On Friday, January 2, a traffic safety check will be conducted on Germantown Road near the Wolf River Parkway. Officers will be there from 6 p. m. until midnight. Then on Saturday, January 3, officers will have a safety check in the area of Interstate 40 at Sycamore View from 8 p. m. through 2 o'clock a. m.

“Last year no one was killed on the New Year holiday in Shelby County as a result of a drunk driver. Through our zero tolerance efforts and our partnership with the Memphis Police Department, we want to stay the same as we begin 2004,” added Sheriff Luttrell.
