North Memphis Targeted By Sheriff’s Deputies

North Memphis Saturation ArrestShelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies once again combined resources in a “zero-tolerance” enforcement effort in North Memphis to address crime.

For several hours last Friday night, March 17, and early Saturday morning, March 18, Deputies assigned to the Reserve, Gang, S.W.A.T., Patrol, Fugitive and Narcotics bureaus patrolled neighborhoods and conducted traffic safety “checkpoints” in the area near Chelsea at Hollywood.

The Sheriff’s Office has been working for the past several months with members of the “Rhodes Hollywood Springdale Partnership,” an alliance of business owners and residents in the Hollywood/Chelsea area. The group has been targeting environmental code violations and crime.

“This initiative, headed by Rhodes College, has made lots of improvements in the neighborhood. By working with us and the Memphis Police Department, we will continue to identify crime patterns and have deputies in the area. We want to reassure these citizens of North Memphis the Sheriff’s Office will respond to their concerns,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Since January 1st of this year, there have been 49 burglaries, 26 aggravated assaults and 17 robberies in this part of North Memphis.

“Residents and business people in this area of Memphis are very concerned about the safety of their neighborhood. We appreciate the Sheriff’s Office working so closely with us to address these crime issues,” said Rhodes College Professor Dr. Mike Kirby, who directs the Rhodes Hollywood Springdale Partnership.

Assisting in the “zero-tolerance” crime initiative were members of the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services, Special Services and Jail Division which helped in the booking process of those arrested. In all, almost 100 Sheriff’s Office personnel took part in the anti-crime initiative.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will continue to utilize Reserve Deputies, officers from various bureaus and support personnel to address crime “hot spots” in all areas Shelby County.
