Crime Suppression Effort To Be Conducted in North Memphis

WHAT:
Shelby County Sheriff's deputies from the Metro Gang Unit, S.W.A.T., Metro D.U.I., Reserve Deputies/Emergency Services will work jointly with the Memphis Police Department and Shelby County Attorney General's Office in a crime suppression effort concentrating in North Memphis neighborhoods.
WHEN:
Friday, February 13, 2004 - late afternoon through the morning hours on Saturday, February 14, 2004
Crime Suppression Boundaries:
North Boundary-Interstate 240
South Boundary-Jackson Avenue
East Boundary-Highland
West Boundary-Watkins
Command Post:
Former “Treasury” department store on Hollywood, just North of Interstate 240. Commanders will be available for interviews. Please contact Steve Shular at the command post for your story needs.
Background:
Many citizens during the past month have contacted the Metro Gang Unit about crime that has been occurring in the targeted area.
Incidents involving illegal drugs, gang activity, drivers speeding and possibly driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, have been reported.
As a result, officers will take a “zero tolerance” stance on all criminal activity in the area tonight and through the morning hours.
Sobriety checkpoints will be conducted at various intersections to ensure motorists are using seat belts and not drinking while impaired by alcohol or other drugs.
Crime Suppression Results:
An update will be sent to you on Saturday morning, February 14, 2004, about those taken into custody.
