North Memphis Area Crime Sweep Nets 48 Arrests and More Than 158 Traffic Citations

Release Date: February 14, 2004

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office joined with the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County District Attorney's Office in a crime suppression effort last evening and early this morning.

Officers focused on neighborhoods in the North Memphis area. The primary initiative targeted fugitives and others wanted in connection with gang-related crimes in an area bounded by:

  • North Boundary-Interstate 240 ( North Loop )
  • South Boundary-Jackson Avenue
  • West Boundary-Watkins
  • East-Boundary-Highland

At various street intersections, sobriety check points were conducted. Officers issued traffic violations and patrolled the area in a “zero tolerance” enforcement effort to stop criminal activity.

Here are the results of the crime suppression effort:

  • Total arrests: 48
  • 11 Felonies
  • 37 Misdemeanors
  • 158 Traffic Citations
  • 22 Traffic Courtesy Tickets

Of those arrested last night, 45 people were fugitives wanted on various charges.

“This partnership between agencies shows the importance of working together to combat crime. By acting on what our crime statistics tell us and listening to the concerns of citizens, these joint crime reduction efforts will be on-going throughout Memphis and Shelby County ,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell.
