Shelby County Sheriff’s Detectives have charged two teenagers, one 19, the other 17, in connection with the murder of a man in a remote area of North Shelby County near Frayser yesterday.

“I commend the outstanding work of our deputies regarding this case.  We had officers from several Sheriff’s Office bureaus who assisted our detectives.  I also want to thank the Memphis Police Department for its assistance in the investigation,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Deputies have charged Mardacy Greer, 19, of Memphis and another 17 year-old young man with killing William R. Craig, Jr., 40, who lived on Montgomery Street in Millington.  He had moved there recently from Houston County Tennessee (in North-Central Tennessee).

Craig was found shot to death about noon on Benjestown Road.  A Memphis Light, Gas and Water employee discovered the body in the front yard of a vacant house in the 3300 block of Benjestown Road near Carrolton.

Deputies say the murder was the result of an argument.  The argument stemmed from the theft of Craig’s gray Dodge pick up truck in November.  On November 23rd, Craig reported it stolen to Memphis Police.

Craig apparently was an acquaintance of the 17 year-old suspect and believed he was involved in the theft.

Investigators say Craig agreed to take the teenager and Greer to the remote area of Benjestown Road early yesterday morning to talk about the stolen truck.

During their discussion Craig was shot several times.  After the shooting, the two suspects then left the Benjestown area in a red Ford F-150 pick up truck that belonged Craig’s father.  The truck was later dumped several miles away in “Sky Lake” in Frayser.

Later yesterday afternoon, deputies spotted Greer driving the gray Dodge pick up on Mountain Terrace Road.  He was taken into custody there and deputies arrested the 17 year-old last night at 3595 Tyla Drive at the Village Apartments in Frayser.

Both the 17 year-old juvenile and Mardacy Greer have been charged with murder in perpetration of robbery.
