Optimist Club to Honor Shelby County Deputies

The Optimist Club will be naming Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Jackie Setliff as “Officer of the Year” on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., in the Sheriff’s Conference Room, 9th Floor, 201 Poplar Avenue.

Sgt. Setliff has been with the Metro Gang Unit for the past two years. Sgt. Setliff was chosen by the Optimist “Respect for the Law Committee” for his professionalism and commitment to serving the citizens of Shelby County. The Optimist Clubs have, since the 1960s, given awards to deserving officers for their exemplary service to the community.

His investigation techniques have led to the arrest of many people, including a murder suspect last month. Before joining the Metro Gang unit, he served 16 years in the Narcotics Division. Sgt. Setliff also has extensive experience in the Traffic and Internal Affairs Divisions.

A quote from his nomination for this award reads, “Sgt. Setliff personifies the term--dedicated professional. He is always willing to go the extra mile for the good of the Metro Gang Unit and the Sheriff’s Office.” A picture of Sgt. Setliff will be posted at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office website under “Public Affairs-Media Releases.”

In another event to honor the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Optimist Club of Airways will be honoring three Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies for their service. Deputies Fred Coleman, Steve Perry and Jeff Robinson, are bailiffs in Shelby County General Sessions Court Division 14. Judge Larry Potter along with officials with the Optimist Club of Airways will honor these deputies as “Unsung Heroes” for their service to the courts.

That presentation will also be held on May 7, 2003. It starts at 11:30 a.m. at General Sessions Court Division 14 in the Criminal Justice Center, 201 Poplar Avenue.
