Sheriff's Office to Again Address Parking Violations Starting July 19, 2004
Release Date: July 15, 2004
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will begin a new enforcement effort next week to reduce parking violations in the unincorporated areas of Shelby County. Deputies will be ticketing motorists who illegally park in spaces for the disabled, block fire hydrants, mail boxes or park tractor-trailers in residential neighborhoods.
“During the past several months, we’ve taken a close look at many of the operations at the Sheriff’s Office. I discovered our officers were not writing parking tickets due to the high fees that are added on to these non-moving violations. However, after a review from our Legal Advisor, we have determined some adjustments can be made to those fees. We will once again address these parking issues as they are reported by citizens or observed by our deputies,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
In early 2002, deputies stopped writing tickets after it was determined that there were more than $90 in potential fees to parking or moving violations in the unincorporated areas of Shelby County. A $10 parking ticket would have cost the violator almost $100.00.
Now, the almost $50 in litigation fees will be waived if people pay the violation without going to court.
Here is a breakdown of the fees attached to parking tickets: |

“We have an obligation to enforce the law and be able to respond to these violations when they are brought to our attention. The clarification in the fees issue will reduce the hardship on the violators and enable our officers to again enforce the parking laws,” added Sheriff Luttrell.
