Three Arrested in Pipe Bomb Explosion in East Shelby County

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and Detective Bureau have charged three people, one of them a juvenile, for making a pipe bomb and destroying a portable restroom yesterday in the Eads community.

About 1:20 yesterday afternoon, residents reported hearing an explosion. Deputies were then called to a home under construction at 11795 Metz Place in East Shelby County.
When Deputies arrived, they found a portable restroom in pieces. Investigators collected samples of what later turned out to be a pipe bomb made from gunpowder. Pieces were found up to 300 feet away from the explosion site.
Residents gave descriptions of three people who were seen in the area at the time of the explosion.
Detectives later arrested Josh Darling, 18, of Collierville and Chris Kassela, 18, of Cordova. A 17 year-old girl with them was also arrested and taken to Juvenile Court.
All three were charged with Possession of a Prohibited Weapon to Wit Explosives or Explosive Devices.
