School Bus Crash in South-East Shelby County Sends 13 Children to the Hospital

Release Date: February 3, 2006

Traffic investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office say a car hit a Shelby County School Bus this morning in South-East Shelby County.

The crash happened just before seven o’clock. Fifty-one (51) students were on the bus going to Southwind Middle School on Lowrance Road.

Investigators say the bus was going north on Hacks Cross and had just turned left to go west on Lowrance. That’s when a Saturn traveling south on Hacks Cross ran into the right rear of the bus.

Several of the children on the bus were shaken up. Thirteen (13) students complained of minor injuries. As a precaution the children were taken by ambulance to Methodist Germantown Hospital.

The 16 year-old driver of the car also went to the hospital to be checked for injuries.

He told investigators he had just entered the intersection at Hacks Cross at Lowrance and couldn’t stop in time from hitting the bus.

The teenager was charged with disregarding a traffic signal.

No charges were placed against the bus driver.
