No Serious Injuries In School Bus Crash This Morning

Release Date: September 15, 2005

Shelby County Sheriff’s Traffic Deputies say a Shelby County School bus hit another vehicle this morning just before eight o’clock. The bus was taking 38 children to Bartlett Elementary School.

Bus #13 was driven by Carolyn B. Thomas, 42, of Memphis. She was traveling west on Pecan Trace, near Pecan Trace Cove, not far from the school.

Investigators say the bus crossed into the opposing lane and hit the side of a Mercury Mountaineer driven by James M. Tylman, 33, also of Memphis.

Ms. Thomas said she was attempting to get two students to sit down on the bus at the time of the crash.

Ten of the children and the driver of the SUV were taken to the hospital as a precaution. There were no serious injuries.

Deputies say alcohol and speed WERE NOT factors in the crash.

Ms. Thomas was charged with failing to maintain control of a vehicle and not devoting full attention to the operation of a motor vehicle.
