School Violence To Be the Focus of Upcoming Community Seminar

Release Date: October 8, 2004

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a seminar on how to identify threats and prevent violence in schools. The seminar is being conducted by the United States Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center located in Washington, D.C.

“This is an excellent example of how law enforcement partnerships can meet a vital need. We work daily with the United States Secret Service on a crime task force. We appreciate this offer for an expert from the National Threat Assessment Center to offer our community some vital insights about this critical issue,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Providing a safe environment in schools is a top priority of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit serve in Shelby County public high schools and middle schools. The training seminar will give deputies, school officials and interested citizens some helpful ways to identify and prevent school violence.

“Students, teachers and parents need to feel safe at school. We felt this was an excellent opportunity for Mark McKee, Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge at the National Threat Assessment Center, to share his knowledge and experience about a very important topic,” said Derek Verdeyen, Special Agent in Charge, U. S. Secret Service Memphis Field Office.

The seminar will be held on October 13, 2004 at Southwest Community College (formerly State Tech) at 5983 Macon Cove near Sycamore View. The FREE session begins at 9 a.m. To make a reservation, call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit, at (901) 867-1401. Faxed reservations will also be accepted. That number is (901) 867-1422.
