Deputy Killed in the Line of Duty
Release Date: December 5, 2002
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has now identified the two suspects associated with the death of Deputy George Selby who was attempting to serve a search warrant at a North Memphis home.
The first person is Reginald Rome who lives at 2433 Chattering Lane. He was born on August 17, 1957 and has a criminal record.
The second person arrested is Calvin Joe Williams who also lives at 2433 Chattering Lane. Williams was born on August 15, 1960. He too has a criminal history.
Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence. They will also consult with the Shelby County Attorney General’s Office about charges which will be forth-coming within the next day or so.
Here is now a brief synopsis of what occurred last evening:
- The Shelby County Narcotics Unit sent several deputies to the home on Chatterling to serve a search warrant. The warrant indicated the probability of illegal drugs being in the home.
- The deputies identified themselves and approached the house. As they approached the door, shots from inside the house were fired.
- At this same time, deputies returned fire. Another deputy, Darrin Feathers, was injured in the incident. However, he was not shot. Suspect Rome was also struck by a bullet in his left hand.
- More attempts were made to encourage the two suspects to surrender. When they did not, a Sheriff’s Office dog that was with the Narcotics team was unleashed inside the house.
- Both suspects were taken to the Med and treated for minor injuries stemming from the incident.
The investigation is continuing. A search is being conducted at the house today for the drugs that were named in the warrant. This initial search was delayed due to the shooting incident and the specific investigation to determine what happened during the exchange of gunfire.
As previously released, Officer George Selby had been with the Narcotics Unit for the past two years. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1994. He was married and had two children. Funeral arrangements are being finalized and information will be passed along as soon as it becomes available.
We want to thank the many citizens and law enforcement agencies that have called the Sheriff’s Office today to offer their support during this tragedy.
All of our interests are focused now on giving assistance to Deputy Selby’s family and to conducting the investigation.
