Selby Shooting Charges

One of two men arrested in connection with the shooting death of Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy George Selby has been charged with First Degree Murder.
Reginald Rome, 45, who lives at 2433 Chattering Lane has been charged with First Degree Murder… and Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Sheriff’s Deputies working with officials with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office filed the charges just a short whileV ago.

Calvin Joe Williams, 42, who was also in the house on Chattering Lane at the time of the shooting has been released. Deputies say he was not involved in Deputy Selby’s death this past Wednesday evening in Frayser. Williams was not charged, and has been released from custody.
Deputies say Reginald Rome was responsible for shooting the gun that killed Deputy Selby. He and other members of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Narcotic Unit were on the front porch of the house to execute a search warrant when the shots rang out killing Deputy Selby.
Investigators say Rome has a previous criminal history including Possession of a Controlled Substance. Deputies recovered the gun used in the killing of Deputy Selby, a 357 Magnum.
Rome is being held tonight in the Shelby County Jail. Williams has been released from the jail.
As previously released, Deputy George Selby had been with the Narcotics Unit for the past two years. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1994. He was 33 years old, married and the father of two children. His funeral will be tomorrow morning at ten o’clock at the Germantown Baptist Church, 9450 Poplar Avenue.
Television stations will be able to feed a signal of the funeral service from the church’s television system. In respect to Deputy Selby, the family has asked that no cameras or media will be allowed inside the building. Exterior pictures at the church will be allowed. Representatives of police, fire and emergency agencies from the Mid-South and across the country will be part of the funeral procession along Poplar Avenue from Germantown Baptist Church to Memorial Park Cemetery .
