Shelby County Sheriff's Office To Conduct Security Checks and Video Tape Valuables For Seniors

Release Date: November 18, 2003

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office will begin free security surveys this week to help reduce the risk of home burglaries. The program will initially focus on senior citizens who are currently visited by the Sheriff's Office Special Services Squad.

“We think it's vitally important to visit people in person to talk to them about ways they can keep their property secure,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell, Jr.

Surveys will also be made of door locks, outside lighting and other factors to reduce the threat of burglaries. Additionally, the Sheriff's Office volunteers will video tape valuables. Should there be a burglary; belongings will be documented for law enforcement officers and insurance companies. Residents will be urged to give the video tape to a relative or store it in a safety deposit box.

During the home visits, engravers will be available to mark property. Neighborhood Watch information will also be handed out to encourage seniors to report suspicious activity on their street.
